Sexagesimal (Base-60) Time Arithmetic

Unlike standard base-10 decimal mathematics, time arithmetic operates on a sexagesimal (base-60) system inherited from ancient Babylonian astronomy. When adding time, whenever the sum of seconds reaches 60, 60 seconds are subtracted and 1 minute is carried over to the minutes column. Similarly, when minutes reach 60, 1 hour is carried over.

Formula: Total Seconds = (Hours * 3600) + (Minutes * 60) + Seconds

  • Carry Rule (Addition): If Seconds ≥ 60, Seconds = Seconds mod 60, Minutes = Minutes + 1. If Minutes ≥ 60, Minutes = Minutes mod 60, Hours = Hours + 1.
  • Borrow Rule (Subtraction): If Seconds < 0, Seconds = Seconds + 60, Minutes = Minutes - 1. If Minutes < 0, Minutes = Minutes + 60, Hours = Hours - 1.

Worked examples: Sexagesimal (Base-60) Time Arithmetic

  • Adding Time with Base-60 Carry: (3h 45m 50s) + (2h 30m 25s) => 5h 75m 75s => 75s = 1m 15s; 76m = 1h 16m = 6 hours, 16 minutes, 15 seconds (6.2708 decimal hours)
  • Subtracting Time with Base-60 Borrow: (5h 15m 10s) - (2h 40m 35s) => borrow 1m (70s - 35s = 35s); borrow 1h (74m - 40m = 34m); (4h - 2h = 2h) = 2 hours, 34 minutes, 35 seconds (2.5764 decimal hours)

Decimal Hours vs. Sexagesimal Time

Payroll timesheets, billing systems, and aviation logbooks frequently require converting sexagesimal hours and minutes into decimal hours. To convert: Decimal Hours = Hours + (Minutes / 60) + (Seconds / 3600). For example, 7 hours and 45 minutes equals 7 + (45/60) = 7.75 hours.

Formula: Decimal Hours = Hours + (Minutes / 60) + (Seconds / 3600)

Frequently Asked Questions

Start by adding the seconds: if the total is 60 or more, divide by 60, keep the remainder as seconds, and carry the quotient to the minutes. Then add the minutes plus the carry: if 60 or more, keep the remainder as minutes and carry over to hours. Finally, add the hours plus any carried hour.
When subtracting column by column, if seconds in the top time are fewer than in the bottom time, borrow 1 minute (add 60 seconds to the top). If minutes are fewer, borrow 1 hour (add 60 minutes to the top). If the entire subtrahend is greater than the minuend, the resulting duration is negative.
Divide the minutes by 60: 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75. Add this to the 7 whole hours to get 7.75 decimal hours.
The 60-minute division originated with ancient Sumerians and Babylonians around 2000 BC. They used base 60 (sexagesimal) because 60 is a highly composite number with 12 factors (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 10, 12, 15, 20, 30, 60), allowing clean division into halves, thirds, quarters, and fifths without fractions.
Yes, hours are not capped at 24. You can enter any number of hours (e.g. 50 hours + 35 hours = 85 hours, which represents 3 days, 13 hours).
Marathoners and triathletes add individual 5K, 10K, or mile splits (e.g. 22m 14s + 21m 58s) to project overall finish times. The sexagesimal addition keeps split seconds and minutes strictly aligned.
Video editors calculate timeline cues by adding and subtracting minutes, seconds, and milliseconds or frames (e.g., 29.97 fps or 24 fps). This calculator handles exact hour, minute, and second arithmetic for timeline adjustments.
Elapsed duration measures a span of time (e.g. 3 hours and 15 minutes of work). Clock time of day specifies a moment on the 12-hour or 24-hour dial (e.g. 3:15 PM). Adding durations simply expands the span without looping around midnight unless you specify a start time.
